Introduction to Chemical Reactions

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Science
Topic:
Introduction to Different Types of Chemical Reactions
Objective:
By the end of this lesson, the students should be able to know the definition of a "chemical reaction" and how to represent it on paper as a "chemical equation". The students also should be able to differentiate between different types of reactions such as synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single displacement and double displacement.
Prep:
The teacher has to set up the stations for the small group activity prior to the class. She must also gather together all the materials needed for the demonstration of different reaction types during the direct instruction part of the lesson.
Materials:
List of materials:
Synthesis rxn: Mg(s) and Bunsen burner
Decomposition Rxn: Hydrogen Peroxide (3%, 10%, 30%), manganese oxide as catalyst,
Single displacement Rxn: Example 1: Cu (s) and silver nitrate solution. Example2: Al (s) from aluminum foil and a copper solution (copper II chloride)
Double displacement Rxn: Example 1: Cobalt II chloride and sodium hydroxide. Example 2: Lead II nitrate and Potassium Iodide.
Neutralization reaction: sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein indicator and hydrochloric acid.
