Symmetrical Owls

Grade Level:
6
Subject:
Art
Topic:
Balance (symmetry) in art
Objective:
Students will be able to create an owl using symmetry, line, color, shading, and tinting using oil pastels and glitter for outlining.
Students will be able to analyze symmetrical art and write journal entry about it.
Students will critique work done by their peers.
Prep:
There are only 9 rectangle tables that fit in the room. When students are getting close to being done using the oil pastels, a separate table will be set up for glue and glitter only (One area for each color being used). Students usually finish projects in waves and not all at the same time. This works really well for when students begin to finish their projects. Students are instructed to return the oil pastels they were using prior to coming to the glue table. Once they are done outlining their owl with glue, then they put it onto the drying rack to dry for at least 24 hours. Glue and glitter will need to be cleaned up, prior to the next class coming.
Materials:
Black Sulphite construction paper 12 x 18 (1 per student and teacher).
Crayola Oil Pastels class pack (10 colors including white and black which are used for tinting and shading).
Pencils with erasers (at least 35)
Q-tips for smudging and blending oil pastels (at least 100 each student with use several).
Multi-pack set of glitter (red, green, silver, gold, and mixed colors)
6 glue bottles to be used with the glitter at the end of the project.
Newspaper or bulletin board paper for a table cover when doing the glitter.

Safety of supplies:
Teacher will review the rules of using oil pastels, glue, and glitter prior to starting that portion of the lesson plan. Students are not allowed to use oil pastels on themselves, other students, tables, or table covers. The base of Oil pastels is oil and it will not come out of clothing, hair, or skin easily. Once the students are done using the oil pastels, they must wash their hands with soap and water.

Procedures with glue: Glue may not be eaten, licked, or put on clothes. Students are only permitted at the glue station when they are completely done using oil pastels and are ready for it to be placed on the drying rack. Students may not put glue on themselves or anyone else. Glue is only to be used on the paper with the glitter and not anything else. If anyone gets glue on themselves or anyone else it can be washed off in the sink with water and soap or peeled off when it dries.
