Lincoln - Douglas Debates

Subject:
US History
Topic:
Lincoln - Douglas Debates
Objective:
SWBAT:
To examine and analyze primary source documents
To compare the viewpoints of Republicans and Democrats during the mid 19th Century
To explain the major issues of slavery and sectionalism, and how that led to the Civil War
Reflection:
The lesson plan is designed to provide students an opportunity to work with primary sources, and additional supports. In my experience, my classes have limited exposure to primary sources and struggle when utilizing resources outside of the textbook or computer.

This specific strategy of utilizing a graphic organizer and partners will provide students the additional scaffolding to guide their use of primary sources. The activity is designed to prompt the collection of evidence from each individual document and students will be writing their own summary and interpretations for each.

The journal serves as a summative assessment, where student will be required to demonstrated their understanding of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, and ultimately the larger issues that led the country to Civil War. The final reflection also will draw from their use of primary sources and requires students to cite evidence from their activity.
Prep:
Students must be familiar with pre- civil war United States sectionalism and structure/ formation of political parties in 1850s. Direct instruction covering politics and slavery of mid-1800s would be recommended.
