The Industrial Age in America - Vocabulary's CODE

Subject:
US History
Topic:
Industrial Age (1870- 1900)
Objective:
Students will be able to state definitions of the terms "robber baron," "financier," "industrialist" and "captain of industry"

List some of the actions, both positive and negative, of one or more captains of industry/robber barons
Reflection:
This lesson provides students an opportunity to preview the vocabulary of the Industrial Age Unit. My emphasize is to make sure all students, specifically English Learners have access to the vocabulary to facilitate future lessons. Terms like "robber baron," "financier," "industrialist" and "captain of industry" are used frequently and students need to be able to distinguish between them.

Using the Vocabulary's CODE method provides multiple opportunities for students to improve their literacy and master the content vocabulary. The maintaining of a glossary and graphic organizers in their notebooks allows students to refer back them in the future when studying or completing other activities. This builds background and study skills for students in future classes as well. I have found my students struggle with connecting vocabulary terms to the content and require constant reminders of definitions when working on assignments. Connecting these words to personal associations and pictures helps students improve their memory and are more likely to master the content.
