Hot Air Balloon Challenge

Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Physical Science Skills
Topic:
Gas Laws
Objective:
To practice critical thinking skills and engineering processes .
To apply the gas law concepts of Charles' Law and Archimedes' Principle within a STEM activity.
Other Information:
Charles' Law : the volume of a gas will increase as the temperature increases providing the pressure remains constant. The balloon has an open bottom and therefore the pressure inside and the pressure outside are equal.

Archimedes' Principle : When the weight of the displaced fluid is equal to the weight of the object in the fluid, the object will float. In the case of the hot air balloon, the weight of the air displaced by the inflated balloon is greater than the weight of the balloon itself, and so the balloon is pushed up towards the ceiling. The upper push( called the buoyant force) is greater than the downward pull of gravity ( the weight ) of the balloon.
