Food Calorimetry

Grade Level:
9
Subject:
Physical Science Honors
Topic:
Calorimetry
Objective:
To utilize the skills obtained in the specific heat activity to design an experiment to determine the energy content of a food item. This experiment will require some initial research as well as the reapplication of prior experience and knowledge. Students will compare their experimental value for the caloric to those reported on the FDA mandated nutritional informationon the packaging.
Other Information:
It's time to get in touch with your inner Wingnut and don your aluminum foil hat! The news is full of stories about changes to nutritional labels on our food packaging and changes to the nation's public school lunch programs. Reports of cities outlawing salt in restaurants, banning the use of trans fats, and limiting drink sizes have made headlines. Even the beloved food pyramid is no longer sacred and has been modified. Is this a giant government conspiracy? Can we trust the FDA mandated nutritional labels. Is an appropriate serving size of Wavy Lays really only 11 chips? Really? 11? Most of us are just getting started at 11 chips.
