Nancy Nolan
Observation Date: October 1, 2013
Evaluator Name: Beverly Chambers
Pre-Observation Conf. Date: Sept. 30, 2013

Grade Level:

Subject:
Math
Topic:
Repeated Addition with Arrays
Objective:
LEARNING TARGETS/FOCUS FOR LEARNING: Standard 4
TSW describe arrays by using a repeated addition number sentence.
DOMAIN: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
STANDARD: 2.OA.4 Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in arrays with up to five columns and five rows; write an equation to show the total as the sum of equal addends.

I CAN describe an array using a repeated addition equation.
Other Information:
CHARACTERISTICS OF LEARNERS/KNOWLEDGE OF STUDENTS: Standard 1
Classroom of 21 second grade students, 4 enrichment cluster students, no IEP, ELL, or students with special needs, large number of "on track" learners, small group (2-3) of intervention level students, 4 students with ADHD characteristics.

CONNECTIONS TO PRIOR/FUTURE LEARNING - PRIOR CONTENT KNOWLEDGE/SEQUENCE/CONNECTIONS: Standard 1, 2, 4
The students have had previous experience with repeated addition equations, number patterns, and skip counting. They are also very familiar with the concept of equal groups and using them to add. Prior Math vocabulary is reviewed often and is necessary to build upon in upcoming lessons. A recent Progress Check indicated that all students had mastery of those skills and concepts. This lesson lays groundwork for future understanding of multiplication concepts (equal groups) as a shortcut to repeated addition and future learning of multiplication concepts and facts. It will also be necessary for understanding sums of equal numbers in future lessons.
