6th Grade: October 26-30, 2015

Grade Level:
6
Subject:
Language Arts
Topic:
Reading Assignment - Realistic Fiction
Objective:
Students will be able to:
- Understand the difference between "dialogue" and "dialect".
- Describe what a character is.
- Infer what the author directly states or implies.
- Differentiate between complete sentences, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences.
- Differentiate between similes and metaphors.
Reflection:
- Students started reading "The School Story" our of the textbooks. We had a lot of great discussions about vocabulary throughout the reading, such as what a manuscript was, as well as what it means to have a penname.
- For this reading, we pop-corn read, and I read aloud a lot of the text. I'm going to slowly wean this group off of such things, because that's what they seem to be used to, and of course, when they are tested at the end of the year, they won't be able to have that as a resource.
- The students overall showed a strong understanding of the text through discussions and prompts in class. They had grammar and vocabulary practice along with the reading, which helped. In the future, it would probably benefit the students to create graphic organizers to help guide their reading once I start having them do it more independently.
