Add / Subtract Rational Numbers

Grade Level:
7
Subject:
Math
Topic:
Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.
Objective:
Be able to use rational numbers to find p + q = r. Students will be able to find that the Absolute Value of p, adding the value of q would equal r. Saying that r = 0.
Be able to use rational numbers to find p - q = r. Students will be able to find that the Absolute Value of p, subtracting the value of q would equal r. Saying that r = 0.
Students should also be able to apply properties to equations using the values of rational and irrational numbers.
Prep:
Have small groups ready if the class is unable to work in groups of their choice. The material will be spread over the course of 3 class periods, given that there are three separate objectives that could eventually be finished. Worksheets with 15-20 problems in total to be used throughout the entirety of the lesson.
Materials:
White board for explanation, names for small groups, worksheets created for students to use and find answers to problems that relate to the objectives given throughout the lesson.
