The Transcontinental Railroad

Grade Level:
8
Subject:
Social Studies
Topic:
The Gamblers Game
Objective:
Learning Target:
I can compare and contrast different routes to the west by analyzing a physical features map.
I can identify the route of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad companies.
I can trace the route of the Oregon Trail, the Pony Express and the Transcontinental Railroad.
Reflection:
Note: In years past I have used the story about the Railroad killed the Buffalo as a listening activity. I would read the story twice as students would complete their map exercise. The lesson was designed to support the listening component of the 8th grade State ELA test. Since this part of the test is no longer administered and this particular group seems to have a hard time focusing with auditory directions I though it best to give them a hard copy and work through it with a partner as I circulated and assisted.
