Spanish Language Arts Dual Language -
August 31 to Sep 4 2015

Grade Level:
6
Subject:
Spanish Language Dual Language Immersion
Topic:
Speaking, Writing, Listening, and Reading
Objective:
Students undertake various tasks to determine their level for Spanish improvement.
Reflection:
Day 1: Didn't have time to get cart for 3rd period. 5th--Had advanced students read and "resumir" as a group "La ciudad de vidrio" and SSL students work on conjugating present--used great video with rap music. 7th--just let them do Duolingo--complain about how hard to work on tablets, but then liked it. VERY ENGAGED!
TUESDAY: Worked on Duolingo with great engagement. Only had one child, Coleby Morrow, who complained and said it was boring. Had to move him out of his group and sign his Husky card because he was so disruptive (2nd time). I think because he's so good at everything, he doesn't like NOT being the best in Spanish.
WEDNESDAY: Great engagement! Because the B day kids got to listen to Janna and her sugar gliders, I had the A day kids trace around someone on butcher paper in their group, draw a skeleton, and then using computers, name the bones and parts of the body in Spanish. Very fun with lots of drawing, Spanish, and working hard.
THURSDAY: Found out that we couldn't do VOKI and their avatars on the iPads because iPads don't have Flash Player (!). Very bad. So I had them do a lesson in Duolingo and then they had to make a video talking about their favorite things in Spanish and show me. I can really tell their Spanish proficiency that way. The English Speakers practiced saying travel phrases and then said them into a video on the iPad. There was not enough time to do the videos after doing Duolingo, so next period I may have them do the video first, and Duolingo second--the Duolingo lesson can take quite a long time(?)
FRIDAY: Still doing the Duolingo because iPads can't do VOKI. VERY disappointed with technology, but still trying to use STEM as an initiative in my class. Problems with iPads include no microphone, constantly losing connectivity, and freezing which makes the students lose all their progress. Put Spanish speaking kids (only) on learning English from Spanish--all it does is switch the sentences around, but learning the same material.
