Critter Crawlers Grade 6
Joanne Goelzer 2015

Grade Level:
6
Subject:
Science
Topic:
Motion, Forces, and Energy
Objective:
To provide an exploration of motion, forces, and energy through the construction of a Critter Crawler and to practice measurement skills
Other Information:
NGSS Standards 6-8

MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. that can be improved.
MS-PS3-5. Construct, use, and present arguments to support the claim that when the kinetic energy of an object changes, energy is transferred to or from the object.
MS-ETS1-1. Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
MS-ETS1-2. Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
MS-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests to determine similarities and differences among several design solutions to identify the best characteristics of each that can be combined into a new solution to better meet the criteria for success.
MS-ETS1-4. Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.

Crosscutting Relationships:

Cause and Effect
Cause and effect relationships may be used to predict phenomena in natural or designed systems. (MS-PS2-3),(MS-PS2-5)

Systems and System Models
Models can be used to represent systems and their interactions—such as inputs, processes and outputs—and energy and matter flows within systems. (MS-PS2-1),(MS-PS2-4)

Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
Proportional relationships (e.g. speed as the ratio of distance traveled to time taken) among different types of quantities provide information about the magnitude of properties and processes. (MS-PS3-1),(MS-PS3-4)

Energy and Matter
Energy may take different forms (e.g. energy in fields, thermal energy, energy of motion). (MS-PS3-5)
Prep:
Make sure that if using food cans that there are no sharp edges.
Use a pair of wire snips or scissors to remove the pointed end of the bamboo skewer.
Materials:
For each Critter you will need the following:

2 CDs You can also use paper plates, but they do not hold up to extended play.
1 soup can with both ends removed. You can also use toilet paper tubes
1 medium size rubber band
1 toothpick
1 bamboo skewer with the point trimmed
1 mint lifesaver or rounded sewing machine bobbin. I like the metal ones.
Masking tape
4 Dice
