Adapting Instructions for Diverse Learners:
Explicit teaching is an approach that combines specific design compo- nents and systematic instruction. The teacher’s role involves designing the lesson and arranging instructional variables to promote optimal learning.
The process of adapting and merging explicit teaching within reform- based mathematics curricula requires careful planning. It may be helpful for special education and general education teachers to engage in collab- orative planning to increase the likelihood that the needs of all students are met. While engaged in collaborative planning, it is helpful for teachers to identify three focal students (i.e., a high achievers, an average achiever, and a low achiever) to think about as the planning takes place. Ideas for adaptation become more apparent when specific students with various needs become the focus of the planning.
