Spelling Battleship: Vocabulary Lesson

Grade Level:
4
Subject:
Vocabulary
Topic:
Thanksgiving/Fall
Objective:
Activity to enhance the production and use of vocabulary to provide a word-rich classroom environment, "Words should be enjoyed, and the study of words should bring no less joy", (Allen, p. 69).
Prep:
Divide students into partners and have them face one another. Place a shield/piece of paper between them to block students from seeing the others battleship. This can be done by folding a piece of paper "hotdog style" and setting it up as a tent. Pass out battleships to students and have them write 6 of the vocabulary words in the boxes that they want to write them in (all of them going across with one letter in each box). The first player guesses a coordinate (example: 2,C). The other student tells them if they have hit a letter or not, and if they missed they mark it on the other board to easily keep track of what they have guessed so far. If they do hit a letter they keep playing until they miss or until they guess a word. When a word is sunk the students then needs to mark it off of their vocabulary list. The students take turns until all of the words have been sunk. The first player to sink all of the 6 vocabulary words on the battleship is the winner.
