Reflection:
Since I had about an hour between our PLC and implementing a new procedure, there were some glitches. I already had evidence that most of the class could not identify the differences between fiction and nonfiction. There was conclusive evidence when I checked the letter/assignment given during sustained reading, because only four students chose a fiction piece. I will address it as a tier one issue for our next focus lesson. I'm planning for us to sort the books they actually used. As we read and examine the book, we will list characteristics, which will provide a reference point for determining future choices. They will practice on Friday, when each needs to identify the nonfiction they plan to use for the next week's assignment. Then on Monday, I will ask them to justify or give reasons why their book choice must be a nonfiction piece.

I have some practical routines in place. There are students who work better alone so they know to move to their spots. The others know I want to be able to see their expressions and monitor them so they typically move the chairs to accommodate my preference. I also find using competition between the tables effective, taking a minute to award points usually pays off in the long run. In addition, scanning occasionally and commenting on a table with everyone on task is worth the time and effort.

During the actual conference, I was having trouble finding the screen I wanted. I still get frustrated when I can't locate the part I am searching for online. During those times, I revert to using the manual, (Then, I hear Danielle's voice saying, "Take the time to find what you focus on so you are able to enter your notes...") but found as I continued to search and posed questions for Gage, eventually, I found the place where I could add information as he answered questions. It was clear Gage was not sure of the genre. That gave me more data that I needed to address the issue with the whole class.

I know I need to plan my conferences better and become more familiar with all the levels. Instead of concentrating on the negative, I choose to pat myself on the back and recognize all I have implemented and believe the gains will snowball as all the pieces are put in place...
