What Are Cookies? This writing activity uses students’ prior knowledge
and the writing steps as scaffolds. Students will
draw on what they know about a particular object or
building, as well as the strategies they have learned
in this chapter and earlier chapters: organizing
ideas, using descriptive details, using pictorial
language, etc.
• Read the directions.
• Give students the assignment to find a photo or
bring a small object to class. However, they should
not show it to anyone.
• Go over the Steps listed in the activity with
students.
• Have students plan and write their description.
• Students can share their description with a small
group.
• Select model descriptions to share with the entire
class.
• When possible, display students' descriptions and
photos for everyone to read
