Objective:

Students will use strategies for adding three numbers and using fact families to solve a word problem. Students will also use the Reading for Meaning strategy to examine errors in reasoning as they discuss and unlock the problem in a small group setting and as a class.

Reflection:

Students read the problem independently and then the teacher read the problem for clarification. Students were able to discuss the statements given to them about the problem as a small group. Each table group presented their statements and stated their opinion. Unfortunately, students need to come to an agreement before presenting their statements to the class. Some children agreed with the statement presented, while others disagreed. Students are working on listening and speaking skills as well as problem solving strategies with the Reading for Meaning strategy. As we continue to use this strategy in the future, I will be sure students learn to come to a concensus before presenting their statements. This will stress the importance of text evidence, too. Overall, the lesson went well and students understood how to add three numbers and use a fact family to solve the problem by the end of the lesson.
