Modeling data with exponential curve

Grade Level:
11
Subject:
Statistics
Topic:
Exponential growth in the spread of Ebola
Objective:
1. Students will be able to plot data by hand and using a TI84.
2. Students will be able to look at the plot and determine if this is exponential or linear.
3. Students will be able to use the TI84 to calculate the equation of best fit for exponential functions.
4. Students will be able to interpolate and extrapolate given an exponential model.
5. Students will be able to plot the residual and calculate the correlation coefficient to determine if an equation is a good model for the data.
Reflection:
This was a successful lesson. Students were excited to be using current, relevant data.
Prep:
None entered.
Materials:
1. Data for students to practice with.
2. Data from CDC on weekly or daily cases of Ebola in West Africa
3. Article from The Economist, Much worse to Come
